American statesman. Governor of Virginia 1776-1779, 1784-1786. Member of the Continental Congress 1774-1775. Member of the Virginia House of Burgesses 1764. Declined appointments to many political offices including Chief Justice of the United States, U.S. Senator, and U.S. Secretary of State.
